Bodegas Alejandro Fernandez Tinto Pesquera Reserva 1988

Founded in 1972 by Alejandro Fernandez; Bodegas Alejandro Fernandez is a modest 16th century stone-built bodega, from where almost all the winemaking process was carried out.

Pesquera wines are always made from the whole fruit, after destemming. Temperature controlled fermentation lasts two to three weeks. Afterwards, and without clarifying, the grape pulp is directly transferred to a combination of French and American oak barrels that have been subject to various degrees of toasting. Where, in between frequent pump-overs, the wines are left to stand. Tinto Pesquera Reservas are aged in oak for no less than 24 months.

100% The Tempranillo vineyards, the vines, which are always trained on low espalier trellises, "to better capture the heat from the ground." The vines grow in poor, well-drained soils, composed of sand and gravel over a limestone and clay subsoil, an ideal combination for rootstock. From his 200 hectares of vineyards, the founder Alejandro still makes the wine himself.

Robert parker rated the 1988 vintage an 87/100 for wines of the Ribera del Duero.
