Lakes Genesis / Bottle #095

While most, if not all who hear the word "whisky" tend to imagine the the damp and misty hills of Scotland, it is our pleasure here at Whisky Auctioneer to bring you another first single malt bottled by our friends south of the the border. The Lakes distillery is situated in the north of England, nestled in the Lake District National Park, surrounded by rolling forests, the calm waters of the Bassenthwaite Lake, and towering mountainous fells. A perfect setting, evocative of the Highland origins of the distillery's product, but splashed with the drama and charm of this unique "new world" whisky location.

The brainchild of founder, Paul Currie, The Lakes distillery was born out of the dilapidations of an old Victorian cattle farm, carefully and lovingly restored after standing empty for 20 years. The plot is now rejuvenated, still drawing directly from the land, from meat and dairy to world class spirits in a 160 year journey. A fascinating twist on the heritage of the site.

Like many new distilleries, The Lakes has hardly been quiet in the intervening years that it takes to mature a malt whisky. Since 2014 they have released several popular spirits, including The Lakes Vodka and The Lakes Gin, the only gin with a true Cumbrian provenance, foraged and distilled in the heart of the region. They have also cemented a solid reputation through their blended whisky, The One. Marketed as "the one British whisky," this is a vatting of malt and grain whiskies from across the British Isles. Now however, the wait is over and The Lakes is proud to bring you their first single malt, boldly titled Genesis, and we're as confident as they are that this is the beginning of another incredible story.

Genesis is the product of a new distillery that has worked tirelessly to discover and nurture its true potential, and at last they are ready to reveal this to the world. The whisky has been matured first in Oloroso hogsheads and then finished in casks made of European and American oak. Finally, these whiskies were married together in Orange wine casks from the Andalusia region of Spain. In order to highlight the full spectrum of flavours that this has produced, the whisky has been bottled at cask strength.

Genesis is intended to be viewed as a work of art in its own right, and this is realised not just in the whisky itself, but in the packaging. The first 101 bottles of this new distillery's inaugural single malt are presented in a stunning glass decanter style bottle, packed neatly into a beautiful rosewood box. This is a whisky that does justice to its Scottish heritage, in a presentation that does justice to the craftsmanship of a region which is, undoubtedly, at the genesis of a true whisky heritage of its own.

Every bottle comes hand-numbered and hand-signed with a certificate of authenticity from The Lakes' master Blender, Dhavall Gandhi. Whisky Auctioneer is delighted to now offer you 99 of these (number 7 and 101 have been reserved by the distillery itself).
