Nc'nean Ainnir / Bottle #009

The idea for Nc'nean distillery was conceived in 2012 by Annabel Thomas and her family, who had acquired the Drimnin Estate on the Morvern Peninsula of Scotland's west coast just 10 years prior. The following year, Annabel Thomas left her job in London to build the distillery from the ground up. As manger and CEO she secured nearly £7.5m throughout two rounds of fundraising, and work began on building the distillery from scratch in 2014. It was designed by the legendary late Dr. Jim Swan, and the first spirit ran from its stills in March 2017. The name, pronounced [nc-nee-an] is an abbreviation of Neachneohain, a figure from Gaelic folk legend known as the Queen of the Spirits.

Making whisky is all about planning for the future, and Nc'nean distillery is pioneering in its understanding of the importance of not just caring for its casks, but for the world around them. It is Scotland's leading organic whisky producer, and sources its barley from just ten certified organic Scottish farmers. Additionally, Nc'nean runs exclusively on green energy, using renewable electricity, a biomass boiler, and cools its stills using rainwater collected in its on-site cooling pond. A zero-waste distillery, in just its third year of production it reused or recycled 99.97% of its waste, and aspires to increase that to 100% by the end of this year.

Of course, 2020 also sees Nc'nean achieve another goal: the launch of its inaugural single malt. Whisky Auctioneer is delighted to offer the the first ten bottles of maiden release, Ainnir, in this exclusive sale. The whisky is a vatting of five casks, specially selected by distillery manager Gordon Wood, Annabel and the rest of the team for their quality and representation of the character and complexity of flavours within the distillery's spirit. They were ex-bourbon casks #128 and #130, and STR (shaved, toasted and re-charred) wine barriques #66, #92 and #120.

Presented at its natural cask strength, this small batch release was filled into 1,320 fully recycled, individually numbered glass bottles. All of the proceeds from the sale of these first ten will be will be split between five charities, each of which works to help the local community around the distillery, the UK hospitality industry, and our environment. They are Trees for Life, The Drinks Trust, The Ben, Morvern Community Trust and The Scottish Farmland Trust.

The auction will run from Friday 14th August and will end from 7pm (BST) on Monday 17th August.
