product Details

Old Sunny Brook 1917 AMS Co Bottled in Bond Bourbon / Prohibition Era

This is an incredible example of Prohibition Era American whiskey. The Prohibition act of 1920 banned the production, sale and consumption of alcohol in the US. However, a select group of distillers were able to exploit a loophole that allowed them to continue distilling and selling alcohol as a medicinal product.

This was distilled at the Old Sunny Brook distillery in Kentucky in 1917. The distillery was an amalgamation of two conjoined plants, one already known as Old Sunny Brook and another called Willow Creek. The distillery remained active during Prohibtiion as a concentration warehouse and its owner, Louis Rosenfield, sold it and its brands to the American Medicinal Spirits Company in 1929.

The American Medicinal Spirits Company was one of only six distilling companies to survive Prohibition of the 434 that existed prior. Exploiting the medicinal loophole was the brainchild of Otto Wathen, then president of his father's R.E. Wathen distillery and it was an idea that continues to prove its value today in the persisting image of his still ever-popular portfolio, which included the bourbon classic, Old Grand-dad. The AMS Co was eventually taken over by National Distillers who reorganised it in 1927, incorporating their Kentucky Distilleries & Warehouse Co, R.E. Wathen & Co, Hill & Hill, and E.H. Taylor & Sons. National Distillers then went on to become one of the "Big Four" post-Prohibition whiskey companies in the US, along with Schenley, Hiram Walker and Seagram.

After repeal, National Distillers ran the Old Sunny Brook until their closure of it in 1975.
