Viña Tondonia 6 Year Old Rioja
Tempranillo dominant red wine from the northern Spanish DOC of Rioja.
The label states "6 ano" indicating it has been aged for 6 years - with most of this time spent in oak barrels the wine would usually be classified a Gran Reserva. However, when the terminology of "Crianza", "Reserva" and "Gran Reserva" was agreed in the 1970s, Don Pedro López Heredia, owner of Viña Tondonia, objected and so refused to use the new terminologies on his wines' labels.
Instead, the neck label simply states "Rioja de Crianza" as was the former terminology of stating the wine had been matured in oak.
