Kilchoman Am Bùrach 2020 Edition

Opened in 2005, Kilchoman was the first new distillery to be built on Islay for 124 years. Its proprietors are the Wills family, and the distillery saw a return of the practice of “farm distilling” to the island, with its own barely fields, malt floors and kilns. Today around 25% of its barley requirement is self-fulfilled, and in 2011 they bottled their first 100% Islay release of single farm, single malt. The distillery’s first release came in 2009, and it has cemented a fine reputation ever since.

Am Bùrach, is gaelic for "the mess, and were the words spoken KIlchoma distillery manager, Islay Heads in the wake of an accident in 2014 when two different batches Kilchoman were mistakenly vatted by an unnamed stillman.

As it transpired, their blushes were saved as the blend of Machir Bay and some Port Cask Matured whisky showed promise. It was laid back down to further mature for six years in bourbon wood before being finished in port casks for 6 months.

One of 10,550 bottles which were released at the end of May 2020.
