Fonseca 1983 Vintage Port
Vintage Port is a specific style of Ruby Port which is made only in exceptional years and from the ripest grapes. The wine is fermented and fortified before being aged for 2 years in massive oak vats which, contrary to the far-smaller hogsheads or port pipes which are used for Tawny Ports, prevent oxidation thus maintaining the ripe fruit character. Upon bottling, the wines continue to age and can reward patient maturation for several decades.
Awarded 4 stars by wine critic Michael Broadbent, and an impressive 92 points from Robert Parker who described it as "magnificently complex."
