Royal Lochnagar 1994 Casks of Distinction 26 Year Old #1289

Royal Lochnagar is so-called after it was bestowed with a Royal Warrant by Prince Albert and Queen Victoria following a visit in 1848. The popularity of the distillery’s Begg’s blend saw it acquired by John Dewar & Sons in 1916, who later became part of DCL, upping the demand for its whisky from other blenders in their portfolio, including Johnnie Walker. Today it is part of Diageo, their smallest distillery by some margin, making the modest amount of its single malt spared for bottling increasingly sought after.

This Royal Lochnagar has been bottled as part of Diageo's Casks of Distinction programme, a selection of individual casks of rare and exceptional single malt Scotch whisky. Each Cask of Distinction is chosen on the basis of their quality, representing the most exceptional and singular expression of the distillery’s character.

Whisky Auctioneer is delighted to have partnered with Scottish Ballet in order to offer this excluisve sale of The Sleeping Beauty Cask of Distinction. European oak cask #1289 was laid down in 1994 at the instigation of Lord MacFarlane of Bearsden, who was Chair of United Distillers at the time, as well as and Vice Chair of Scottish Ballet. The Scottish artist, Norman Edgar, was commissioned to paint the cask end portraying Scottish Ballet Principal dancer, Nicci Theis, in the iconic role of Princess Aurora, the sleeping beauty. It was to be a donation with a difference, an investment in the future of Scotland’s national dance company.

Twenty-six years later, The Sleeping Beauty has been awakened and this highly collectible bottle is now ready to be shared with whisky lovers and ballet fans alike, with every pound raised at auction contributing to the Scottish Ballet Endowment Fund. All bottling and auction costs have been generously donated by Diageo and Whisky Auctioneer in support of Scottish Ballet.

The auction runs from 9th-13th September 2021 and will feature 470 of the 503 bottles drawn from the cask. Bottle number #001 will also include an original Norman Edgar hand-painted cask end, and bottles #001 through #010 will also include a behind-the-scenes experience with Scottish Ballet.
