Modern Malt Whisky Market is the online retail division of Sanyo Bussan Co, a Japanese wine and spirits importer and distributor founded in 1973. The company also stages an annual expo under the same name, the first of which were held in 2006 and are generally hosted twice each year, one in its native Osaka and the other in Tokyo.

Over the years the events have become an important fixture in the Japanese whisky calendar. As part of the events, companies have often produced special bottlings to be sold and tasted. These have included single casks from the like of Chichibu, Glendronach and most of the Inver House Distillers portfolio which is represented in Japan by Sanyo Bussan Co.
