Aberlour

One of many Speyside distilleries in the Pernod Ricard portfolio and up until 2018 was part of just a select group of three from which they marketed single malts, alongside Glenlivet and Strathisla. The French multinational operate it through their Chivas Brothers Scotch whisky division.

Glenfiddich

A malt distillery in Speyside that distilled its first spirit on Christmas day in 1887 and has remained family-owned by William Grant & Sons ever since. The company was the first to make a single malt brand its flagship product and Glenfiddich was also the first distillery to open to the public.

Nc'nean

A modern Scotch whisky distillery on the west coast of Scotland, founded in 2017 by Annabel Thomas. Located on the Drimnin Estate on the Morvern Peninsula, the distillery was designed by the late Dr. Jim Swan and its production is both fully organic and entirely powered by renewable energy.

Springbank

A revered single malt distillery in Campbeltown that has operated since 1828. It is today owned by J&A Mitchell & Co who produce three single malt styles there. These are its flagship two-and-half times distilled Springbank, a heavily-peated malt known as Longrow, and the triple-distilled Hazelburn.

Ardbeg

A distillery located on the south coast of the Isle of Islay. It is currently part of the Scotch whisky holdings of LVMH. Despite being closed twice in the latter 20th century, the distillery's heavily-peated single malt has always been highly-regarded.

Brora

A storied distillery in the Sutherland area of Scotland. Despite having closed in 1983, it developed cult status for the high quality single malt it had produced, particularly a peated style between 1969 and 1973. Such was its popularity, it was eventually rebuilt by Diageo and opened again in 2021.

Macallan

Crown jewel of the Edrington Group and one of the best-known names in single malt Scotch, made famous by the legendary status of much of the whisky it has produced over the years, including its Fine & Rare series, Anniversary malts and flagship annual 18-year-old release.

Talisker

A single malt distillery on the Isle of Skye and for many years the only producer on the island. Part of the Diageo portfolio, its single malt has become one of the company's best-selling brands in recent years and it is also an important contributor to blends such as Johnnie Walker.

Grythyttan

A former Swedish single malt distillery that operated between 2010 and 2013. Its owners then tried unsuccessfully to move the operation to Scotland and it has never re-opened. Its whisky was only officially bottled twice, however its remaining stock was bought by Bergslagens Destilleri in 2016.

Cambus

A closed Scottish grain distillery that operated between 1806 and 1993 when it was closed down by Diageo. The company still owns the site, transforming it into a cooperage in 2011. Although mostly used to provide fillings for blends, a Cambus single grain brand was marketed at times.

Glenury Royal

A former Highland malt distillery that was located in Stonehaven on the east coast of Scotland. Some of its single malt was bottled under license by John Gillon & Co in the 1970s and 1980s, however it was shut down by Distillers Company in 1985 and subsequently demolished.

Old Midleton

A former Irish whiskey distillery located in Co. Cork, established by the Murphy Brothers in 1825. It became part of the Cork Distilleries Group in 1868 and later, the Irish Distillers Group in 1966. The latter closed it down in 1975 after building a new Midleton distillery next-door.

Acadian

A former Canadian distillery complex, built by Larry McGuinness in 1957. Its Canadian whisky brands included Acadian Signature, Four Seasons and Old Canada. The distillery has been closed since 1986 and the buildings are today owned by the Pernod Ricard group.

Pittyvaich

A contender for shortest-lived Speyside distillery, opened by Arthur Bell & Sons in 1975 and operational only until 1993. The distillery was intended to increase provision for the company's blends but its acquisition by Guinness in 1985 eventually saw it deemed surplus to requirements.
