Aberlour is one of many Speyside distilleries in the Pernod Ricard portfolio and up until 2018 was part of just a select group of three from which they marketed single malts, alongside Glenlivet and Strathisla. The French multinational operate it through their Chivas Brothers Scotch whisky division and it also plays an important role in providing malt for several of their best-selling blends.
The reverence for the cask strength and sherry-matured A'Bunadh series, launched in 1997, has greatly boosted the popularity of the distillery and its output from all eras is increasingly sought after.
When Aberlour was acquired by Campbell Distillers in 1945, it became an important provider of its White Heather and Clan Campbell blends, the latter of which it is still tied to through its parent company, Pernod Ricard. When the French multinational acquired Campbell Distillers in 1974, production had been scaled up the year prior and one of their first actions was to use the extra inventory to introduce Aberlour as a single malt brand. It became particularly popular in France where its ownership gave it wide distribution and in the 1980s the company played on this by packaging it in a similar style to many cognac brands at the time. Even going as far as inventing a VOHM designation for it.
The classic and now discontinued 10-year-old then debuted in 1988, retaining almost the same aesthetic for the next three decades until the distillery sold the final case of it at the end of 2021 after their entire portfolio was rebranded the year prior. The core range is comprised of several age-statements alongside three cask strength, limited batch offerings: Casg Annamh, the bourbon-matured A'Bunadh Alba and sherry-matured A'Bunadh. The latter is regarded by many as the crown jewel in the proprietary range, earning an army of dedicated followers since its debut in 1997.
