Benrinnes is a malt distillery in the Speyside region of Scotland and is part of the extensive portfolio of drinks multinational, Diageo. Known for its highly individual spirit style, the output from the distillery is highly prized by blenders. It is therefore rarely seen bottled officially as a single malt but is prominent among releases from independent companies.
The production method at Benrinnes has varied over the years, and it first switch to a triple-distillation regime with the addition of new still in 1966. In 1974, this ceased in favour of an partial triple-distillation process before Diageo reverted Benrinnes to a traditional double-distilled single malt in 2007.
Due to its importance to its various owners' blends over the years, Benrinnes single malt was not officially bottled as a single malt until 1991 when it was included as part of the Flora & Fauna series from United Distillers - in which it is still available from Diageo today.
The distillery was not furnished with its own unique single malt brand until 2009 when it was included in the annual Diageo Special Releases offering for that year. It was used again in the 2014 series however has not been seen since. Benrinnes single malts are available through Diageo's private casks programme, Casks of Distinction, but as with the Flora & Fauna bottling the name appears using generic series-specific branding.
