American Brands was a holding company established in 1969 that had an important spirits division in addition to its holdings in tobacco, insurance, golf, and home and hardware.
Its whisky holdings were operated by Jim Beam Brands Worldwide, which included the eponymous Kentucky bourbon brand, its Small Batch Collection labels and the former portfolio of National Distillers which it bought in 1987. It also owned a Scotch whisky division through its acquisition of Whyte & Mackay Distillers in 1990. The company was renamed Fortune Brands in 1997 and was eventually split up in 2011.
