Tsunuki is the fourth Japanese whisky operation to have been established by Hombo Shuzo Co and the second of those currently still in operation. The other is Shinshu and when it reached the limits of its production capacity in 2015, the company opted not to expand it and instead open an additional site that would produce a completely different style. Heavily focussed on terroir, the company swaps some casks from Shinshu and Tsunuki to age at each other's warehouses, as well as at a third site in Yakushima.
The first Tsunuki single malts were released in 2020 and its also provides fillings to the Mars Whisky blends.
As is common in Japan, the single malt brand of Tsunuki is branded as a sub-category of the Mars Whisky label alongside those from Shinshu as well. The debut single malt release was called The First and was launched in 2020. As with Shinshu, the brand forgoes a permanent core range release in favour of an annual batch release.
Limited editions come in the form of various serialised releases, single casks, and the unusual expressions bottled from casks aged at Shinshu and Yakushima.
