Springbank 40 Year Old Millennium Limited Edition

Springbank distillery has been owned and operated by the Mitchell family in Campbeltown since 1837, and it one of Scotland's most revered distilleries. Following a brief mothballing between 1979 and 1987, upon the reopening the decision was taken to cease all sales to the blending industry and focus on its single malt sales. Today it is one of the only distilleries to malt, distil, bottle and mature whisky on the same site, and produces three distinct and highly prized single malts.

Released in March 2000, this 40 year old was the fourth instalment of a six-part series produced for the new Millennium. Launched in late 1998, the set comprised whiskies matured from 25 to 50 years, all now highly-prized amongst collectors.

Macallan Archival Series Folio 3

It may be hard to imagine today, but for much of the 20th century, Macallan was primarily a constituent malt in blends. It was not until the 1980s downturn in the market that the distillery decided to focus on its single malt brand. Fortuitously, this coincided with the crest of a wave of enthusiasm for the high quality releases that the distillery had licensed to Campbell, Hope & King and Gordon & MacPhail in the 1960s and 1970s. These remain some of the most collectible on the market. While global single malt sales volume is still lead by Speyside neighbours, Glenfiddich and Glenlivet, Macallan is easily the most sought after. So much so in fact, that they had to open a brand new distillery in 2018, a subterranean architectural masterpiece within the Easter Elchies estate, boasting 36 copper pot stills.

The theme of the Folio 3 is Macallan advertising campaigns from the 1980's and 1990's, and the presentation includes a book containing the best of these. The illustration on the box is from an advert used in a Victorian era edition of Punch magazine, and is intended to capture the notion that whisky is best produced in cold weather, a remark that Macallan claim was made on their very own estate at Easter Elchies.

The 2018 edition of this limited release from Macallan, this was only available from the distillery and was the third in the series.

As with the previous Folio releases, the bottle is presented in an elegant book-shaped tin box.

Due to the size of the presentation tin, this lot will include a two bottle shipping fee.

Macallan Archival Series Folio 4

It may be hard to imagine today, but for much of the 20th century, Macallan was primarily a constituent malt in blends. It was not until the 1980s downturn in the market that the distillery decided to focus on its single malt brand. Fortuitously, this coincided with the crest of a wave of enthusiasm for the high quality releases that the distillery had licensed to Campbell, Hope & King and Gordon & MacPhail in the 1960s and 1970s. So much so in fact, that they had to open a brand new distillery in 2018, a subterranean architectural masterpiece within the Easter Elchies estate, boasting 36 copper pot stills

The 2019 and fourth edition of this limited release from Macallan was only available through an online ballot. This was unlike the previous releases which were available only at the distillery.

Folio 4 features an advertisement including a Strathspey composed by James Scott Skinner (1843-1927). The ad notes that Skinner, \"The Strathspey King\", was moved to music by the lilting flavour and melting resonances of a tumbler of his favourite malt whisky - The Macallan.

The ad, small but groundbreaking, was the first instance of musical notation displayed on a page of British newspaper, The Times, and quite possibly in the advertising of any whisky.

As with the previous Folio releases, the bottle is presented with a book inside an elegant book-shaped tin box.

Due to the size of the presentation tin, this lot will include a two bottle shipping fee.

Bidding advice

You can place bids either under the lot image on the main auction page or on the right side of the individual lot page.

Placing a Maximum Bid
Use the "Set your bid limit" button on the left side of the bidding panel to enter the highest amount you're willing to bid on a lot. Our system will then automatically raise your bid in set increments if you’re outbid, up to your maximum. If someone bids above your set limit, we’ll notify you by email so you can choose whether to increase your bid.

Placing a Single Bid
Alternatively, place a single bid by selecting the button on the right side of the bidding panel. The button displays the amount needed for the next increment. For example, if the current highest bid is £50.00, the button will show "+ £55.00" (reflecting a £5.00 increment).
