What are miniatures?
It’s all in the name! Miniatures are tiny bottles of whisky, often lovingly rendered versions of their full-size counterparts, complete with matching bottle shapes and labels. They are also a hidden gem of the secondary market, offering collectors or drinks a range of benefits...
Collecting Whisky Miniatures
Collecting full-size whisky bottles, as all whisky aficionados will know, can be an expensive business. Miniatures provide a more accessible gateway into this world, allowing aficionados to own legendary whiskies in smaller quantities and at more affordable prices.
A considered and thoughtful love of whisky can be great equalising force among many people, however the price point at which many bottles exist means that shared access to some of the world’s rarest and best-regarded drams is far from a reality. Miniature bottlings are an ideal avenue to challenge this norm however. Often an overlooked category of the secondary market, they provide an excellent opportunity for people to collect some of the most legendary bottlings from lauded distillers like Macallan, Springbank and Bowmore, and cult independent bottlers like William Cadenhead and Gordon & MacPhail.
While not everything is available in this diminutive form, collectors may be amazed at what they are able to find.

Tasting Iconic Whiskies with Miniatures
Miniatures also offer the tantalising possibility of opening and tasting legendary whiskies, without the pressure of opening full-sized bottles worth hundreds - or even hundreds of thousands - of pounds. But not only that - quality is always a big factor in old and rare whisky, and miniatures allow you to have near-full control over the bottle, in contrast to paying big sums in a whisky bar for a single dram from an open bottle of unknown provenance.
We spoke with one of our clients, a dedicated miniature whisky enthusiast and collector, about his motivations for collecting miniatures:
“I started my whisky journey with miniatures almost 10 years ago where I would buy them to drink. Whiskies from the 1960s-1970s or earlier always intrigued, excited me, and was especially fascinated with cask strength samples. I was always constantly on the lookout for great minis...
After drinking through a considerable amount of them over the years, the takeaway isn’t just the pleasure of the whisky. It’s the understanding of how things were made back in the day with little compromise, where the quality of what you made mattered the most, and left an impression.”
