Hanyu 1988 Ichiro's Malt 'Card' #9204 72cl / Ten of Spades​

Since its stills were turned off in 2000, Hanyu has become one of Japan's most sought after single malts. An economic recession at the turn of the millennium forced the distillery to shut its doors, and the remaining casks of its unblended whisky stock were purchased by Venture Whisky, a firm established by the Hanyu distillery founder's grandson, Ichiro Akuto, in 2004. In 2005 he bottled his first single casks under the Ichiro's Malt label. He later cemented his legacy with the opening of the acclaimed Chichibu distillery, but his finest achievement will surely always be considered to be the Hanyu 'Card' series. The bottles are a collection of 58 releases, each displaying one of 52 playing cards on the label, two jokers, and a second batch of follow up releases to the original 2005 Ace of Spades, Queen of Hearts, King of Diamonds, and Jack of Clubs bottlings. Each unique in its own right, every one of these have become a true collector's piece and an important moment in the history Japanese whisky.

Distilled in 1988 and bottled in 2006, this was matured first in a hogshead then finished in an American Oak Puncheon.

Macallan 1967 Peter Blake Anecdotes of Ages / Licence to Distil - One of 1

It may be hard to imagine today, but for much of the 20th century, Macallan was primarily a constituent malt in blends. It was not until the 1980s downturn in the market that the distillery decided to focus on its single malt brand. Fortuitously, this coincided with the crest of a wave of enthusiasm for the high quality releases that the distillery had licensed to Campbell, Hope & King and Gordon & MacPhail in the 1960s and 1970s. These remain some of the most collectible on the market. While global single malt sales volume is still lead by Speyside neighbours, Glenfiddich and Glenlivet, Macallan is easily the most sought after. So much so in fact, that they had to open a brand new distillery in 2018, a subterranean architectural masterpiece within the Easter Elchies estate, boasting 36 copper pot stills.

Presented in early 2021, the Anecdotes of Ages collection is the result of the Speyside giant once again collaborating with acclaimed British artist, Sir Peter Blake. Famously the designer of The Beatles iconic Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band record sleeve, he is perhaps best known in the whisky world for labelling 12 bottles of the legendary Macallan 1926: currently the most expensive single malt in history. This is the third time he and The Macallan have worked together. 

The collection saw Blake produce thirteen one-of-a-kind bespoke labels to be affixed to a single cask of 1967 vintage Macallan, each depicting important themes from the distillery's history. This is one of those incredibly rare expressions, entitled License to Distil. 

The label features an original collage from Sir Peter Blake celebrating the year 1824, the year in which an official license to distil spirits on the estate was granted to Alexander Reid, an English teacher turned farmer. The label depicts Reid, a sheep (a nod to the farming history of the estate) and a horse-drawn fire engine, which was introduced with the establishment of the first municipal fire brigade in Edinburgh that same year. The label has been hand-signed by Blake.

Macallan 57 Year Old Lalique Six Pillars Collection No.3

Released in 2009, this is the third decanter in a highly limited, exclusive Macallan collaboration with crystal makers, Lalique. The series is called The Six Pillars collection, and saw 6 decanters released over an eleven year period, each celebrating one of the six facets that Macallan believe set them apart from Scotland's other distilleries. The Macallan Six Pillars are: Exceptional Oak Casks, Spiritual Home, Curiously Small Stills, Finest Cut, Natural Colour and Peerless Spirit.

This decanter champions the \"Finest Cut\" pillar, and according to Macallan, their dedication to taking only the very best cut of their new make spirit is, \"highlighted by the crystal maker’s perfume stilligoutte. The iconic “satiné” stopper points with a transparent edge to highlight the Finest Cut of The Macallan.\"

Limited to just 400 decanters, this is number 242.

Bowmore 1966 Samaroli Bouquet

Islay's Bowmore distillery and renowned Italian bottler, the late Silvano Samaroli, are both legends in the world of the whisky. The 1966 Bouquet is the glittering supernova that is created when these two key elements of whisky history collide, at just the perfect moment in time. Regarded by many as the one of, if not the best whisky ever bottled, it is not often one of these absolute gems is brought to market.

The Bouquet is rated in first place on WhiskyBase.com's Top 1000 whiskies of all time, occasionally trading places only with another Samaroli epic, the Laphroaig 1967, also bottled for him by R.W. Duthie. Emmanuel Dron, whisky author and owner of the famous Auld Alliance bar in Singapore recently opened a bottle of the Bouquet for customers in that very venue, with enthusiasts and connoisseurs flocking from all over Asia to sample a drop of this liquid gold. And if you still need convincing, the seasoned palate of Serge Valentin of WhiskyFun.com awarded this Bowmore a staggering rating of 97 points. He writes:

\"Wow! Not an easy, sexy old Bowmore at all, almost a ‘bugger’ and you have to sort of tame it, but when you manage to do so, it’s just splendid. One of the very few total winners I’ve been lucky to be allowed to taste.\"

The coming together of this cask of Bowmore and Silvano Samaroli is one of those rare, chance meetings that go on to write the greatest stories. The aptly named Bouquet represents almost the resplendent blossoming of the long-growing Italian love affair with single malt Scotch whisky. Distilled in 1966, a golden era in production at Bowmore distillery, and the time when Armando Giovinetti was hard at work pushing single malt whisky in his native Italy. Samaroli founded his bottling company in Rome just two years later, in 1968. Giovinetti believed lighter, younger whisky, the Glen Grant 5 year old specifically, was best positioned to capture the hearts and taste buds of the Grappa favouring Italian public. The forward-thinking Samaroli had other ideas though. A kindred spirit with his contemporaries at W.M. Cadenhead, he believed wholeheartedly in the bottling of cask strength whisky, and Silvano's first releases were a collaborative effort with Scotland's oldest independent bottler. These were released in 1979, and were closely followed by the acclaimed Flowers series in 1981, a direct precursor to this, the Bouquet. The Flowers series, bottled with ornate illustrative labels (hand-drawn by Samaroli himself), were a sensation and finally provided Samaroli with the platform and audience he knew his whisky deserved, and in 1984, he rewarded their faith in his product with a whisky he felt they deserved, and it is possibly the greatest ever bottled.

Macallan 52 Year Old 2018 Release

2018 was a celebratory year for Macallan, with the opening of their new distillery in June that year. Befitting the occasion, the distillery released a number of impressively aged single malts, beginning with their second bottling of a 50 year old, followed by this even rarer release, the 52 year old.

A perfect time capsule, this was distilled in the year that the old Macallan increased its production capacity with the introduction of six new stills, and bottled when the distillery was once again undergoing a huge forward-looking expansion.

The wood and spirit have worked together in perfect harmony for over half a century, with maturation taking place in a first-fill European oak sherry seasoned cask, sourced from Jerez De La Frontera. 

Released in 2018, this is bottle number 19 of just 250 bottles.

Bowmore 1964 Black Bowmore 50 Year Old 75cl / The Last Cask - US Import

Islay’s oldest working distillery, Bowmore was established in 1779 and is now regarded as one of the most popular malts not only on Islay, but in the whole of Scotland. The distillery was acquired by Stanley P. Morrison in 1963, ushering in an era of iconic single malts, including the legendary Black Bowmore, credited by many as the genesis of whisky collecting, bottled in 1993. The distillery was bought under the control Suntory the year after (they had been stakeholders since 1989), and it remains one of the most collectible brands in Scotch whisky today. Bowmore is one of the few remaining Scottish distilleries to use its own floor maltings, providing them with 40% of their requirements.

The pinnacle of whisky collecting and investing, the Black Bowmore is arguably one of most famous and sought after bottles of whisky ever produced.  This is the latest and last iteration of this ground breaking Bowmore series of whiskies, again distilled in 1964 and bottled after 50 years in the cask. This 'Last Cask' of Black Bowmore was vatted in 2007 from the remaining two Oloroso sherry hogsheads which were left over from the previous 2007 release of this legendary whisky.

The original Black Bowmore series released in the early/mid 1990s was followed in 2007 by the Black, White and Gold Bowmore range, all from 1964.

This is the final bottling in the series and is one of two Jokers released to complete the 58 bottle series; one in colour and one in black and white (monochrome).  This Monochrome Joker is arguably one of the rarest releases from Japan and is a fitting finale for this incredible series of whiskies.

The Monochrome Joker was distilled in 1985 and initially matured in a hogshead, before a second period of maturation in Mizunara oak cask #1024.

Macallan 1949 Fine and Rare 52 Year Old #935 75cl / US Import

The Fine and Rare Series of whiskies was launched in 2002, designed to represent the very best vintages and whisky that Macallan had to offer, dating back as far as 1926.

Hogshead #935 was one of only two casks selected for the series as the finest examples of this vintage.

Karuizawa 1968 Single Sherry Cask 50 Year Old #6223 / Water of Life

Karuizawa distillery was established in 1955 in the town of Miyota on the southern slopes of Mount Asama. It began production the following year, producing single malt for the Ocean blends from Daikoku Budoshu. Initially it was difficult for the distillery to obtain malt, but a lift on import restrictions in 1958 meant the distillery was able to experiment with the production of a Speyside-esque product, importing the same golden promise barely used at Macallan, and sherry casks. The subsequent quality of output saw it appearing in Japan as a single malt for the first time in the 1980s. Sadly, the Japanese whisky market was not strong at the time, and Karuizawa was closed  in 2001 by owners, Mercian, and eventually dismantled. Its legacy is lives on however, with its still relocated to other distilleries in Japan, but predominantly in the hugely sought-after single cask releases that began to appear in 2007, from independent bottler, Number One Drinks. It is now one of the most prestige single malts on the planet, the reverence for which only grows as the remaining stock continues to thin.

This Karuizawa was distilled in 1968 and matured in single sherry butt #622 for an incredible 50 years. It was bottled in 2018, and is presented in an impressive wooden display case.

This was released by Macallan to commemorate the turn of the millennium. This whisky is among the most desirable and sought after whiskies on the market, and represents the most luxurious of Macallan, not only in presentation and quality, but also in rarity and age.

This whisky was highly rated by Michael Jackson, the late whisky connoisseur and author, and remains a proud accomplishment of then Master Distiller, David Robertson. Bottled in May 1999, this Macallan 50 year old was crafted by marrying 3 butts that were filled on the same day, 14th January 1949.

Released in 2016 & 2017, the Splendid Age Collection from the legendary distillery consisted of a variety of different single cask bottlings. Each release included artwork with titles such as Izumi Shikibu, Iwahashi, Karakoto and Cherry Blossoms at Night in the New Yoshiwara. Each of the bottlings are presented in a well-crafted wooden box.

This Karuizawa was distilled in 1981 and matured in single sherry cask #3515 for 35 years. It was bottled as part of the Splendid Age Collection in 2016.

This Karuizawa was matured for 34 years in single sherry cask #3668. It was bottled by Elixir Distillers and was released alongside a 38 year old version in Autumn 2021. The pair make-up the penultimate release in the Karuizawa Geisha series.

Originally known as Speciality Drinks, Elixir Distillers was established in 1999 as the independent bottling arm of The Whisky Exchange, which launched its online retail site the same year. Their first bottlings were under the Single Malts of Scotland label in 2005, followed by the Elements of Islay range and Port Askaig single malt brand in 2006 and 2009, respectively. The company was renamed Elixir Distillers as of 2017.

Caol Ila 1966 Gordon and MacPhail Cask Strength Celtic Label / Meregalli Import

Caol Ila distillery was built in 1846 by Hector Henderson, who was bought out from the venture a little over 10 year later by Bulloch Lade. The blending firm merged with DCL (now Diageo) in 1927, who still run the distillery today. In 1972 the original site was demolished and replaced by a new one. When distilling resumed in 1974, Caol Ila was the largest producer of single malt on the Isle of Islay. Despite this, due to its importance in popular blends such as Johnnie Walker, its single malt brand disappeared under United Distillers, and it was not until 2002 that it would return, when the 12 year old was revived by Diageo. The Flora & Fauna release was well-regarded in the meantime, but it was independent releases like this that gave the best opportunity to sample this much-loved single malt.

This rare Caol Ila was distilled in 1966 and bottled at cask strength by Gordon & MacPhail in 1986.

This is part of the Celtic Label series, an Italian exclusive range bottled by Gordon & MacPhail for Italian importers Giuseppe Meregalli, Donini and Nadi Fiori's Intertrade. Meregalli are the current Italian distributors for Gordon & MacPhail and have been since the mid-1980s, meaning most of these Celtic Label bottles were produced for Meregalli.

Highland Park 50 Year Old 2010 Release

Highland Park was built by David Robertson all the way back in 1798. The distillery's relationship with blenders, Robertson & Baxter, saw it acquired by Highland Distillers in 1937, who were subsequently bought by Edrington in 1999, who run it today. The modern Highland Park single malt brand was first officially bottled in the 1970s, with the release of an 8 year old age statement, but distillery bottlings first appeared around the 1950s. The look of the brand has changed many times over the years, but its cult following and popularity has never diminished. It remains one of the most recognisable single malts in the world to this day.

This incredibly rare bottling of Highland Park was bottled from a combination of five refill casks from 1960.  The casks were married together to 'harmonise' their flavours before being bottled, a process Highland Park calls 'cask harmonisation.'

The bottle has been designed by New York based Jeweller Maeve Gillies, who grew up in Edinburgh.  The bottle which is created from hand-crafted sterling silver is inspired by the forces of nature and in particular the sea, using her jewellery making expertise the bottle features a metallic 'net' design, a piece of Orkney sandstone carved with the Highland Park logo and a hidden silver replica of the Rose Window from St Magnus Cathedral.

Macallan 40 Year Old The Red Collection 2023 Release

It was not until the 1980s downturn in the market that the distillery decided to focus on its single malt brand. Fortuitously, this coincided with the crest of a wave of enthusiasm for the high quality releases that the distillery had licensed to Campbell, Hope & King and Gordon & MacPhail in the 1960s and 1970s. These remain some of the most collectible on the market. While global single malt sales volume is still lead by Speyside neighbours, Glenfiddich and Glenlivet, Macallan is easily the most sought after. So much so in fact, that they had to open a brand new distillery in 2018, a subterranean architectural masterpiece within the Easter Elchies estate, boasting 36 copper pot stills.  

The 40 year old was first launched in October 2020 as part of The Red Collection. The range also includes a 50, 60, 71, 74 and 78 year old, some of the oldest whisky ever bottled by the distillery. The colour Red has a myriad of significance for Macallan, from its founder's name, Alexander Reid, meaning \"the red one,\" to the the label aesthetic being an homage to the oldest vintages bottled from the distillery in the late 1970s and Allan Shiach marking them with red ribbons in the 1980s.

Created by Whisky Maker, Kirsteen Campbell, this is the 2023 Edition of the 40 year old.

Macallan 1979-1982 Gran Reserva Collection 4 x 70cl

The Gran Reserva bottlings from Macallan were released between 1997 and 2002. This is for the 1979 - 1982 vintage releases , this 18 year old Macallan is widely regarded as one of the most memorable and legendary bottles ever produced.

Ardbeg 1967 Kingsbury 29 Year Old #923

You would not think it to see it now, but Ardbeg had a difficult time of it for much of the 20th century. The distillery was bought in a joint venture between Hiram Walker and DCL in 1959, both intending to supply their blends. The subsequent years were very successful, but DCL backed out in 1979 (closing many of their other distilleries a few years later), and Hiram Walker then struggled in the 1980s era oversupply when interest is blended Scotch was waning. They closed it down for the majority of the decade. It re-opened briefly in the 1990s before being revived for good by Glenmorangie plc in 1997. The lack of demand in the period prior to this, thankfully, saw a lot of casks sold to independent bottlers, many of which have gone on to become legendary releases.

The rising demand for its product in the 1970s meant that Ardbeg was forced to stop using its own malted barley, instead buying it in from the neighbouring Port Ellen maltings. The result was a change in the style and profile of the distillery's whisky, and pre-1974 vintages such as this are incredibly sought after by connoisseurs and collectors alike.

Distilled on 8th March 1967, this Ardbeg was matured in single sherry cask #923 until June 1996. A sister cask, also bottled by Kingsbury is the highest rated Ardbeg on Serge Valentin's WhiskyFun. 

Kingsbury are Japan's most sought after independent bottler. They were founded in 1989 by Eaglesome, the high-end deli in Campbeltown that was purchased by J & A Mitchell & Co of Springbank distillery, and turned into one of the region's finest whisky merchants. They initially bottled Kingsbury's exclusively for the Japanese market, before the label was acquired by native firm, the Japanese Import System. They have released a number of some of the most collectible whiskies, including a Bowmore 1966, and two dark sherry casked Ardbeg, this is one of them.

Glen Grant 1948 Gordon and MacPhail Private Collection / Coronation of King Charles III

Glen Grant is one of Speyside's most recognised distilleries. It was built in 1839 by James and John Grant, and was a huge facility for its time. Its size increased exponentially over time, in the hands of John's son, John \"The Major\" Grant (who also built the short-lived Caperdonich next-door), and twice in the 1970s following the merger with The Glenlivet Distillers and its subsequent takeover by Seagram. Glen Grant was bottled as a single malt as early as the late-19th century, and developed a global export market. None perhaps as important as in Italy, where their agent in the 1960s, Armando Giovinetti, turned it into the nation's favourite whisky, after discovering the palate preferences of his countrymen for very young single malts. So loved is Glen Grant in Italy, that the distillery is now owned by Gruppo Campari, who bought it from Pernod Ricard in 2006.

This whisky was filled into single first-fill ex-Sherry butt #1365 on 10th April 1948. It was bottled on 15th December 2022 and released to commemorate the coronation of King Charles III.

Gordon & MacPhail are one of the largest and most recognisable whisky companies in the world. Although they began distilling at the newly refurbished Benromach distillery in 1998, for most of their history they were an independent bottler. Their labels are recognised by whisky lovers the world over, and their licensed bottlings from distillery's like Macallan and Talisker in the 1970s and 1980s, when the companies were not bottling themselves, are a huge part of the success of those distillers today.

Part of the 'Private Collection,' launched in December 2018 as part of a wider overhaul of the range that sees G&M keeping trend with the move towards cask strength and single cask bottlings.

• Macallan James Bond 60th Anniversary Release Decade 1-6 43.7% 6 x 70cl - This is the complete six-bottle series that celebrated the 60th anniversary of the James Bond films in 2022. The packaging of each bottle displays production sketches used throughout the six decades of filmmaking.
• Globe Trotter Presentation / Travel Suitcase - Established in 1897, Globe Trotter is a luxury manufacture of travel luggage. They became famous for their high-quality craftsmanship and the use of a patented and sturdy Vulcanised Fibreboard lining in their suitcases; of which this example features. As you would expect, the case is well made and features fine leather tags, straps and strong lockable catches.
• Limited Archival Pigment Prints x 6 - These are six beautiful prints that feature the artwork used in the packaging for the James Bond releases. They are printed on smooth fine art paper which is made from 100% cotton (dimensions 60.5 x 41.65 cm)

Glen Grant 60 Year Old Dennis Malcolm 60th Anniversary

This Glen Grant was distilled October 1960 and matured in single Oloroso sherry cask #5040. When it was released in late 2021, it became the distillery’s oldest bottling in its 181-year history.

The release celebrates the 60th anniversary of Master Distiller Dennis Malcolm, who began his career at Glen Grant distillery as a cooper's apprentice when he was a teenager. The whisky is presented ina stunning hand-blown crystal decanter, designed by Glencairn Studio to imtate one of the distillery's stills.

Yamazaki Suntory Pure Malt 25 Year Old 1998

Suntory’s flagship distillery, Yamazaki was founded by Shinjiro Torii in 1923. The town of Yamazaki was chosen to be the site of Japan’s first commercial distillery due to its very ‘Scottish’ climate, and with it being an area where three rivers converge. In its early days, Yamazaki produced both malt and grain for Suntory's blends, but the opening of the Chita distillery in 1972 allowed the company to focus on its single malt brand. It is now one of the world's most desirable. The first spirit ran from the stills in 1924, on 11th November at 11:11am.

This is the rare first expression of Yamazaki's sought-after 25 year old expression, bottled in 1998. This bottle still features the term Pure Malt, as the company had yet to define its whiskies as single malts, as it does now.

Karuizawa 1967 Single Cask #6426 / TWE 10th Anniversary

Karuizawa distillery was established in 1955 in the town of Miyota on the southern slopes of Mount Asama. It began production the following year, producing single malt for the Ocean blends from Daikoku Budoshu. Initially it was difficult for the distillery to obtain malt, but a lift on import restrictions in 1958 meant the distillery was able to experiment with the production of a Speyside-esque product, importing the same golden promise barely used at Macallan, and sherry casks. The subsequent quality of output saw it appearing in Japan as a single malt for the first time in the 1980s. Sadly, the Japanese whisky market was not strong at the time, and Karuizawa was closed in 2001 by owners, Mercian, and eventually dismantled. Its legacy is lives on however, with its still relocated to other distilleries in Japan, but predominantly in the hugely sought-after single cask releases that began to appear in 2007, from independent bottler, Number One Drinks. It is now one of the most prestige single malts on the planet, the reverence for which only grows as the remaining stock continues to thin.

This Karuizawa was distilled in 1967 and matured in single cask #6426. It was bottled in August 2009, and split into two releases. One for European distributors La Maison du Whisky, and this one, produced to celebrate the 10th anniversary of online sales at The Whisky Exchange.

Macallan 1986 The Ultimate Dinner Single Cask #191101 / El Celler de Can Roca 13

Fortuitously, this coincided with the crest of a wave of enthusiasm for the high quality releases that the distillery had licensed to Campbell, Hope & King and Gordon & MacPhail in the 1960s and 1970s. These remain some of the most collectible on the market. While global single malt sales volume is still lead by Speyside neighbours, Glenfiddich and Glenlivet, Macallan is easily the most sought after. So much so in fact, that they had to open a brand new distillery in 2018, a subterranean architectural masterpiece within the Easter Elchies estate, boasting 36 copper pot stills.  

Macallan and the El Celler de Can Roca are now long-time collaborators, having cooperated on the release of both the Edition No.2 in 2016 and the Distil Your World London Edition in 2020. Prior to both of these however, was The Ultimate Dinner. 

Held over six dates in June and July 2014, The Ultimate Dinner was a series of charity events, co-hosted by Macallan and the famous restaurant in Girona. It saw the Roca brothers, Joan, Josep and Jordi, create a menu designed to complement the sensory experience of drinking Macallan single malt. Tickets for guests cost $10,000 each, and each specially designed dish was accompanied by a rare and in some cases, exclusive Macallan expression.

Hanyu 1990 Ichiro's Malt 'Card' #7002 / Jack of Spades​

Since its stills were turned off in 2000, Hanyu has become one of Japan's most sought after single malts. An economic recession at the turn of the millennium forced the distillery to shut its doors, and the remaining casks of its unblended whisky stock were purchased by Venture Whisky, a firm established by the Hanyu distillery founder's grandson, Ichiro Akuto, in 2004. In 2005 he bottled his first single casks under the Ichiro's Malt label. He later cemented his legacy with the opening of the acclaimed Chichibu distillery, but his finest achievement will surely always be considered to be the Hanyu 'Card' series. The bottles are a collection of 58 releases, each displaying one of 52 playing cards on the label, two jokers, and a second batch of follow up releases to the original 2005 Ace of Spades, Queen of Hearts, King of Diamonds, and Jack of Clubs bottlings. Each unique in its own right, every one of these have become a true collector's piece and an important moment in the history Japanese whisky.

The Jack of Spades was distilled in 1990 and bottled in 2007. It was initially matured in a hogshead, then finished in a new American oak hogshead.

Macallan 1948 Select Reserve 51 Year Old

Fortuitously, this coincided with the crest of a wave of enthusiasm for the high quality releases that the distillery had licensed to Campbell, Hope & King and Gordon & MacPhail in the 1960s and 1970s. These remain some of the most collectible on the market. While global single malt sales volume is still lead by Speyside neighbours, Glenfiddich and Glenlivet, Macallan is easily the most sought after. So much so in fact, that they had to open a brand new distillery in 2018, a subterranean architectural masterpiece within the Easter Elchies estate, boasting 36 copper pot stills.

This magnificent bottle of Macallan was distilled in 1948 and matured for over half a centur. It was bottled on the 26th of November 1999. The 1948 Select Reserve was chosen from just three Spanish sherry oak casks, all distilled from choice barley harvested in the late summer of 1947.

Macallan decided to allocate each bottle an individual date rather than the more conventional bottle number. Of the 366 bottles released, not one bottle carries the same date as any other. This particular bottle is labelled the 11th of May.
