Located in the Highland Perthshire town of the same name, Aberfeldy distillery was built in 1896 by John Dewar & Sons to provide whisky for their various blended Scotch brands.

It is still run by the same company, which today operates as the Scotch whisky division of the Bermuda-based multinational, Bacardi Limited. Once rarely seen outside the independent bottling scene, Aberfeldy single malt has enjoyed increasingly strong market presence since the turn of the century and the distillery also functions as the brand home and visitor centre for the Dewar's brand.

Due to its importance to the Dewar's blends and later those of various other DCL companies, distillery bottlings of Aberfeldy single malt were rare prior to its acquisition by Bacardi Limited. The first of these did not come until late in the 1980s when United Distillers released a rare 15-year-old expression, the label of which became the basis for the Flora & Fauna series in 1991. Aberfeldy then became of the original distilleries that were part of that family of bottlings until its sale in 1998.

When Bacardi Limited bought Dewar's from Diageo they immediately introduced proprietary single malt brands for each of the three distilleries that came with it. Aberfeldy was introduced in 1999 and in 2014 it was repackaged as part of The Last Great Malts collection alongside Aultmore, Craigellachie, Royal Brackla and The Deveron. Its core range comprises a 12-, 16- and 18-year old, supported by regular limited editions, single casks, and both distillery and travel retail exclusives.
