Buffalo Trace is a historic whiskey distillery in Kentucky and one of the oldest in the US, with distilling on the site traced back as far as 1775 and the distillery itself built by Harrison Blanton in 1812. Today it is owned by the Sazerac Company who acquired it as the George T. Stagg distillery in 1992, renaming it in 1999.
In addition to its flagship bourbon, the distillery produces a huge array of important and often historically significant brands. Among these are Weller, Pappy Van Winkle, Eagle Rare and Colonel E.H. Taylor. The distillery also has a partnership with the Japanese company, Takara Shuzo, producing its Blanton's and Ancient Age labels for it, among others.
Sazerac Company caused quite a stir when revealing Buffalo Trace as the distillery's new title, borrowed from a DBA ("doing business as") name that they had used to bottle several Age International brands in the early 1990s. This was unusual as it was more common for a distillery to take its name from a product it sold, or from its actual parent company. After much confusion, they enlisted the help of former master distiller, Elmer T. Lee, who found the barrels ageing in their warehouse that would become the first batch of Buffalo Trace straight bourbon. It proved so popular that he was subsequently invited to assist them with replicating the flavour for their core range product.
The proprietary Buffalo Trace bourbon is bottled as both 80 and 90 proof varieties and is also available within the Sazerac Company's Single Barrel Select programme. Other Buffalo Trace-branded products produced over the years include the popular Experimental Collection and Single Oak Project, an unaged spirit called White Dog, and a trio of Kosher Whiskey releases.
