The Pulteney distillery in Wick was built by James Henderson in 1826 and for a long time was the northernmost distillery on the Scottish mainland. It was acquired by John Dewar & Sons in 1924, subsequently becoming part of the Distillers Company although the distillery was quickly forced to close down in 1930 when Prohibition in its hometown was enacted in an attempt to curb drunkenness among its maritime society. When it re-opened it was bought by Robert ‘Bertie’ Cumming and sold to Hiram Walker along with Balblair in 1955.

Today the distillery is part of the Inver House Distillers portfolio and its single malt is released under the popular Old Pulteney brand name.
